The Visionary Behind PSI

The Visionary Behind PSI

In December 1975, Vernon Litzinger, along with two silent partners from Virginia, laid the foundation for Packaging Services Industries (PSI). By January 1976, PSI had officially opened its doors, marking the start of a journey that would lead to significant impact in the packaging industry.

Vernon and his partners started PSI with a $50,000 loan and an additional $5,000 each from their own pockets. While his partners had prior experience running a plant, Vernon brought his background as an engineering student from Penn State and his experience as a salesman at Republic Steel in Cleveland. Additionally, Vernon served as the Vice President of a locker company and sold school equipment to schools in the surrounding area. Reflecting on his journey, Vernon says, “The path to get here was unknown, but I always knew I wanted to have my own company.” His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to finding new territories for PSI to grow were instrumental in the company’s early success.

The company’s first plant was established in Hagerstown, MD and within five years, PSI expanded to Connellsville, PA. In its first year, PSI achieved a modest monthly revenue of $5,000, which has since grown to an impressive $10-20 million. The key to this growth has been Vernon’s strategy of continuous investment in technology, machinery, skilled sales reps and design engineers.

Under Vernon’s leadership, PSI expanded further with a plant in McAdoo, PA in 1996. Today, PSI serves over 1,500 customers, including major players like Airbus, PPG Glass, and various defense contractors. The company’s success is built on a family business ethos, characterized by collaboration and a relentless focus on quality and customer satisfaction.

Vernon’s time is now primarily devoted to research and development, ensuring PSI remains at the forefront of innovation. On the frontline, his son Chris Litzinger serves as Vice President, and his grandson Taylor Litzinger is on the path to becoming a Sales Manager. Vernon cherishes the family business, and takes great pride in knowing that his family will continue to excel and uphold the legacy of PSI with dedication and integrity.

Vernon’s vision for PSI is one of continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring that the company remains a leader in the packaging industry.
