PSI 2024: A Year in Review

As 2024 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a year of growth, achievements, and community impact at PSI. Let’s take a moment to celebrate the people and moments that made 2024 an unforgettable year.

New Equipment

At PSI, we understand that continuous investment and innovation are key to staying ahead in the industry. Since 2020, we have invested over $26 million in cutting-edge technology to enhance our capabilities. This year, we introduced two game-changing tools to our operations: the Creaform HandyScan 3D Max scanner and the Göpfert Rotary Die Cutter Evolution.

Our design team primarily uses the 3D scanner for designing foam packaging and custom crating, especially when we can’t physically obtain the product. For example, we utilized the scanner to overcome challenges in creating custom crates for Airbus. The scanner allows our team to handle the complexity of large, oddly shaped parts without access to technical drawings by scanning directly at their facility.

The Göpfert Rotary Die Cutter Evolution triples the run speed of our existing die cutters and streamlines efficiency by enabling simultaneous exterior and interior printing in just a single pass. But that’s just the beginning. This advancement empowers us to collaborate directly with our customers’ marketing teams. It allows us to offer tailored branding solutions that set them apart from their competition and elevate their customers’ unboxing experience

Inspiring the Next Generation

Last spring, we partnered with Virginia Tech students on two impactful capstone projects. One focused on designing an all-paper cooler for the medical field, while the other involved redesigning packaging for our customer, Veeder-Root, and one of their probes to align more closely with PSI’s capabilities. We’re proud of the innovative solutions these students created and look forward to future collaborations with aspiring packaging professionals.

In September, Daniel Grant (Virginia Tech ’20) and Joseph Hindman attended the Virginia Tech Packaging Program Career Fair, where they connected with talented students passionate about sustainability, design, and engineering. We are grateful for our growing relationship with the students at Virginia Tech and look forward to the possibility of welcoming more of them to our team in the future!
